Just twelve kilometres long and one kilometre wide, Vamizi Island, fringed with gently-shelving beaches and calm waters, is a haven for adults and children alike. Miles of unpadded white sand waiting to be explored entices you to kick off your shoes and feel the sugar-like grains beneath your feet, whilst beachcombing along the shore.

A refuge for both humans and animals, green turtles come ashore to lay their eggs on the beach; giant coconut crabs nestle within the coral, and in the mangrove forests rare samango monkeys and colourful exotic birds have made Vamizi Island their home too.

Crusoe invented castaway chic, but Vamizi Island defines it, with impossibly romantic timber villas strung loosely along one of the most beautiful beaches in the world. Designed with the privacy of honeymooners as well as families in mind, your villa is your own domain where you can truly relax – unwind from the stresses of everyday life with a massage or simply indulge in the view of your own private beach.

Seeking a little island life, you can always find company at the bar and restaurant at Vamizi, the natural focal point of the island. Choose from a range of cocktails or explore our list of fine wines and sink back into the acres of cushions. There’s no dress code here, so kick off your shoes – that is if you’ve even bothered to unpack them.

A slender coral island just off Mozambique's remote northern coast, Vamizi Island is part of the Quirimbas Archipelago.

Guests can connect from South Africa, Mozambique or Tanzania easily within a day, with direct international flights from Europe. Then a private Vamizi flight, which take you straight from Pemba (Mozambique) or Dar es Salaam (Tanzania) to the Vamizi Island airstrip. From there, you are transferred to Vamizi in the “Islandrover” which takes a steady forty five minutes to the lodge.

Simply grand or grandly simple - this lodge isn't about the usual five star luxury and all mod cons, it's about the more rarified pleasures of exclusive island life.

Imagine wafting through muslin and filtered sunlight, flopping straight from your room into a private ocean and enjoying elegant lunches with your toes in the sand...

It's hard to compete with the perfect desert island, so at Vamizi they don't. They just take what comes on the breeze, and mould it into a more civilized form.

Exclusivity is one of Vamizi Island's greatest assets and, as the only lodge on the island, it has the space to spread wide, so each Kitala ( a local Ki-mwani word meaning luxury beachfront villa) amply commands its own part of the beach. Eight Kitalas - one or two bedroomed - are

Decking a distinctively island table, surf-fresh seafood and other tropical dishes is served, set off by the sea breaking on the shore just feet away.

During the day, there’s the relative formality of the thatched open dining room in the main lodge, or choose to retreat to Muntu Nkulu, the castaway restaurant open during the winter season on the south side of the island, for a buffet and total relaxation.

You can also take the total desert island approach - alone with a shipwrecked picnic on some deserted beach.

As a reflection of Vamizi Island - the yin to the ocean's yang - the island's health and wellness professionals can treat the whole you - mind, body and spirit. You couldn't want for a better place for healing. Vamizi Island is basically one big spa - with nurture for the entire self, both above and below the water. They've also added the luxuries of some of the best energy and body treatments available – such as bespoke yoga massage, reflexology and heated herbal stone massage.

Deep Sea Fishing

Snorkeling trips, scuba diving, deep sea fishing, turtle watching and releasing, castaway picnics, whale watching expeditions, monkey and bird-watching, community visits, sea kayaks, hobie cat and dinghy sailing, dhow sailing.

Children's Facilities

There are plenty of toys for children and adults: kayaks, sailboats, snorkelling gear, windsurfers and fishing equipment.

Fishing trips and sea cruises are a full-on marine biology lesson with huge varieties of deep sea fish to be seen emerging from the depths; whales, dolphins or flying fish are often in sight, if not right by the boat.

Scuba instructors can also introduce those slightly older children to their first experiences underwater, whether snorkelling or diving and nature guides can help them discover the island’s land based wonders – exotic birds, monkeys and giant coconut crabs.

Three Kitalas have been specifically designed as family Kitalas, with large double (possible triple) bedrooms adjoining a central decked lounged area. All beds are mosquito netted, even though Vamizi is a low- risk malarial area and, for the night time, babysitters can be arranged.
