Resort Overview

Resort Overview

The Kandy House in Sri Lanka is steeped in history; built in 1804 by the last Chief Minister of the Kandyan Kingdom, a distinct ancestral and regal atmosphere prevails. Two centuries after it was built, the house underwent major restoration. While retaining the building’s heritage, a contemporary finish was added, befitting for a grand guest house. Landscaped into the hillside, a palm-fringed infinity pool overlooks rice paddy fields.
The hotel is the perfect base for exploring Kandy, with cultural sites like the Temple of the Tooth nearby. Immerse yourself in flora and fauna at the Udawattakelle Sanctuary, where there are 270 acres of tropical birds and monkeys.

With only nine bedrooms, The Kandy House is highly exclusive, giving guests an experience of staying in a private house rather than a conventional hotel. The interior style combines classical Kandyan period architecture with Dutch colonial furnishings. All rooms are named after butterflies, such as Peacock Royal and Indian Royal, which thrive in Sri Lanka.

Dining at The Kandy House is typically Sri Lankan fusion, using only fresh ingredients bought daily from the local market, and a feast of ten traditional curries feature twice a week. Specialties include baked blue swimmer crab with nutmeg & parmesan crust, or Thai-ginger rubbed & grilled seer fish. Private dining is also a popular choice with guests.
Visit the masseur in the hotel’s private and intimate ambalama, which overlooks paddy fields. With twenty-five years experience as an Ayurvedic therapist, he expertly uses energy healing alongside massages to achieve improved blood circulation and the elimination of aches.
