Resort Overview

Amangalla in Galle, Sri Lanka, has a certain endemic charm. A harmonious combination of colonial design, rich heritage and pared-back elegance, it is the perfect resort for a tranquil escape. Amangalla is steeped in history, showcasing authentic colonial features in its architectural and aesthetic details. As an integral part of the Galle Fort UNESCO World Heritage Site, Amangalla is superbly positioned, looking out to the resort’s mature garden, which dates back to the 1860s. Galle Fort is the best preserved colonial fortification in the whole of Asia, promising endless opportunities for exploration.

Integrally colonial, rooms present elements that span centuries: stately grand four-poster beds, long-armed planter’s chairs and comfortable cane chaises. The traditional interiors continue with high ceilings, period antiques and original polished Burmese teak floorboards that date back to the building’s origins. Beauty is not restricted to indoors; rooms either boast views of the Fort’s quiet lanes or the hotel’s 18th Century gardens.
Dining at the resort is traditional and charming; decorated with period furniture, antique silverware and white linen, The Dining Room possesses a complete sense of place. Originality is promised here with a daily-changing menu, comprising the chef’s finds at the markets in Galle. A mellow and intimate setting, guests can begin a traditional Sri Lankan dining experience on the balcony while looking out at the inspiring terracotta roofs of the fort.

Focus is placed on the use of water for the restoration of both the body and mind. A temple to wellbeing, the spa has two hydrotherapy suites containing hot and cold plunge pools, highlighting Amangalla’s natural approach to healing. Ever true to its roots, Amangalla’s library details the history and culture of Sri Lanka, in an extensive collection of non-fiction. For a more regional insight, there are also features on Galle Fort’s interesting and tumultuous past. Hung with original prints, the library is yet another inviting space to retreat to at Amangalla.
