Authentic Mauritian Home-cooking at Shanti Maurice: La Kaze Mama

Shanti Maurice, one of Mauritius’ most prestigious and renowned luxury resorts has just released a new food initiative designed to tantalise your taste-buds with the authentic flavour of traditional Mauritian home-cooking.

This initiative, named ‘La Kaze Mama’, is a creative mixture of two of the resort’s already popular dining experiences. ‘Grandma’s kitchen’ is an existing opportunity for guests to dine at the comfortable home of the grandmother of one of the resort’s team members, and ‘Herb Garden BBQ’ is where you can dine outside on the most sumptuous barbeque food in Mauritius in the beautiful, aromatic herb garden in the heart of the grounds. ‘Le Kaze Mama’, on the other hand, combines the two, meaning you can try Grandma’s traditional Mauritian home-cooking in the setting of the vegetable and herb garden.

The garden has over thirty varieties of organic herbs and vegetables including citronelle, persil, romarin, basil, mint, and coriander, and beetroot, aubergine, broccoli and onion depending on the season. The vegetable and herb area of the garden is part and parcel of the overall beautiful landscaped layout of the entire garden grounds, and is a picturesque area to be situated in. If you wanted to learn more about the garden, outside of your dining experience with Grandma, it can also be arranged that the Executive Chef take you on a tour, explaining the philosophy of Shanti Maurice’s menu as they go.

The 'La Kaze Mama' Experience

The ‘La Kaze Mama’ experience starts with a welcome local rum based cocktail made from tamarind rum, lemon juice, ginger and spices to awaken your palate in preparation for the frenzy of flavours being prepared by Grandma. Surrounded by the luscious tropical greenery, Grandma will prepare ‘faratha’ (a local bread) for your viewing, before dishing out a buffet selection of her lovingly made curries, salads, pickles and chutneys whilst you are sat under a pergola by small wooden fires. If you have saved yourself any room (and even if you haven’t, no doubt), a selection of homemade Mauritian sweets, sorbets and tropical fruits will be served.

This is where authentic Mauritian cooking really comes to life; available on Thursdays you can experience this dining initiative for a small extra supplement when staying at Shanti Maurice luxury resort on your luxury Mauritius holiday.
